A new California law is taking direct aim at technology companies that collect and profit from the personal information of schoolchildren. The legislation, which state lawmakers passed to address growing concerns about digital privacy in education, places strict limits on how private firms can handle data gathered from students.

Under the measure, technology companies are barred from using student data to train or develop artificial intelligence models. This provision targets a practice that critics say has quietly turned classrooms into a source of free material for AI systems. The law also restricts how companies can otherwise use that information, requiring them to limit collection to what is strictly necessary for educational purposes.

Supporters argue the change is overdue. For years, parents and privacy advocates have warned that apps, learning platforms and digital tools used in schools often gather detailed records about children, including their behavior, performance and online activity.
