Chicago, Sept. 09, 2025 — A coalition of health organizations is advocating for a significant increase in nutrition education within U.S. medical schools. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, alongside 14 other prominent health organizations, is urging medical institutions to expand the number of hours dedicated to nutrition training in their curricula.
The need for this enhancement is underscored by the rising prevalence of chronic lifestyle-related diseases, including diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular issues, and malnutrition. These health problems not only impact individual families but also place considerable pressure on healthcare systems across the nation.
Currently, it is reported that most medical students receive less than 20 hours of nutrition instruction throughout their four years of training. This limited exposure raises concerns about physicians' preparedness to address dietary and nutritional factors that contribute to these chronic diseases. The coalition emphasizes that integrating comprehensive nutrition education into medical training is essential for equipping future healthcare providers with the knowledge needed to promote healthier lifestyles and improve patient outcomes.
