The political action committee Renew Pre-K 4 SA is urging voters to back the program's reauthorization on the Nov. 3 ballot, and it has built a substantial financial base for that push. The committee has raised more than $600,000 ahead of the election, according to campaign finance figures, giving supporters significant resources to make their case to the public.
The funds are expected to pay for advertising, outreach and get-out-the-vote efforts in the weeks before Election Day. Backers say the money reflects broad community support for the early childhood education program, which provides prekindergarten classes to thousands of young children in the region.
Opponents have raised questions about the cost of the program and how the money is spent, but supporters argue that the returns are clear. They point to research showing that children who attend high-quality pre-K are better prepared for kindergarten and more likely to succeed in later grades.
The reauthorization vote will decide whether the program continues to receive the local sales tax funding that sustains it. Early voting begins in the middle of October, and both sides are preparing for a final stretch of campaigning. With more than $600,000 on hand, the renewal campaign appears well positioned to compete for attention in a crowded election season.
