As university branch campuses close, the aftermath creates an “education desert.” To provide rural students with improved access to higher education, the College for Rural Wisconsin has launched an innovative program in collaboration with UW-Madison. This initiative aims to combat the growing challenges faced by students in rural areas who often find themselves without adequate educational resources.
The program focuses on creating pathways for students to pursue higher education despite geographical and financial barriers. By offering outreach services, academic support, and mentorship opportunities, the initiative seeks to empower students and enhance their educational experiences. This approach not only addresses the immediate needs of rural students but also fosters a sense of community and belonging.
With the increasing number of closures of branch campuses, the importance of such programs cannot be overstated. Ensuring that students in rural areas have access to quality education is crucial for their future success and the overall development of the region. The College for Rural Wisconsin’s efforts represent a significant step toward bridging the educational gap and providing equal opportunities for all students, regardless of their location.
