Governor Jared Polis today signed three bills to support students at Colorado's higher education institutions, aiming to reduce financial barriers and expand opportunities for low-income and rural residents. The new laws focus on affordability, mental health resources, and workforce development.
The first bill increases state funding for need-based grants, allowing more students from low-income families to attend college without taking on excessive debt. The second measure establishes a pilot program to provide free tuition for rural students pursuing degrees in high-demand fields like teaching, nursing, and engineering. The third bill requires public colleges to offer expanded mental health counseling services, including telehealth options for students in remote areas.
Polis emphasized that these changes are designed to keep Colorado competitive and ensure that a college education remains accessible regardless of a student's background or hometown. Supporters say the legislation addresses long-standing gaps in the state's education system, where rural students often face limited access to advanced coursework and support services.
Critics have raised concerns about the long-term funding sources for the programs, but state officials project that increased tax revenue and federal matching funds will cover the costs. The bills take effect at the start of the next academic year, with full implementation expected within two years.
