This summer, Carnegie Mellon University is opening its campus to a new wave of young learners. The university is hosting its annual program for K-12 students, bringing in scholars from the local Pittsburgh area and from countries around the world. The initiative gives these younger students a firsthand look at what it is like to study and live in a university environment.
The program is designed to bridge the gap between high school and higher education. Participants get to step into real college classrooms and labs. They work alongside CMU faculty and current students, tackling subjects that range from robotics and computer science to creative writing and the arts. The goal is not just to teach specific skills, but to spark a lasting curiosity.
For many of these students, it is their first time on a major research campus. They experience the pace of college life, the challenge of advanced coursework, and the value of collaboration. Organizers say the program aims to show these young scholars what is possible. By removing the mystery of what college looks like, they hope to make the path to a place like CMU feel more real and achievable. The summer session is a chance for the next generation to see themselves as part of a larger academic community, long before they officially apply.
