TXST, Leica Geosystems partner to modernize construction education

Texas State University has announced a new partnership with Leica Geosystems, a global leader in measurement and surveying technology, aimed at bringing its construction education program up to speed with modern industry standards. The collaboration will give students in the construction science and management programs direct access to cutting-edge tools and software used on real job sites today.

Under the agreement, TXST will integrate Leica's latest hardware and digital solutions into its curriculum. That includes robotic total stations, laser scanners, and advanced building information modeling software. Students will get hands-on practice with these tools, learning how to capture precise measurements, monitor job site progress, and manage data in ways that improve efficiency and reduce errors.

The move comes as the construction industry increasingly relies on digital workflows and automation. Many firms now expect new hires to be familiar with these technologies from day one. By embedding them into coursework and lab exercises, TXST aims to close that gap and produce graduates who are ready to contribute immediately.

Faculty will also receive training and support from Leica specialists, ensuring they can teach the latest methods effectively. The partnership is seen as a win for both sides: Leica gains a pipeline of skilled future users, while TXST strengthens its reputation as a forward-looking program.

School officials say the goal is not just to teach equipment operation but to help students understand how digital tools reshape project planning, safety, and communication. The first courses using the new technology are expected to launch next semester.
