This prevents the common error of designing flexibility and structure around convenience rather than learning outcomes.
If learners have to decide "what to do next" at every step, the course is too unstructured. If they have no decisions at all, it is too rigid.
Never use data to shame learners. Use it to improve the course.
This transparency builds trust. Learners are more likely to follow a structure they understand and more likely to use flexibility responsibly when they know it is intentional.

Start by being explicit about your goals. Then design structure that supports those goals. Then add flexibility where it reduces friction without reducing progress. Test, gather feedback, and iterate.
The learners who benefit most from distance learning are those who cannot fit into traditional molds. They are working parents, rural students, people with disabilities, professionals changing careers. They do not need a course that is easy. They need a course that respects their constraints while holding them to a high standard.
That respect is the true balance. It is not about making learning convenient at the expense of rigor, nor rigorous at the expense of accessibility. It is about creating a system that says: we know you have a life, and we also know you are capable of doing this work. Here is the support to prove it.
