The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, known as UNESCO, issued a stark warning on Friday, calling on global financial institutions to dramatically expand debt-for-education exchange programs. A new report from the agency reveals a troubling trend: many developing nations now allocate more money to servicing their national debts than they do to funding public schools.
This imbalance is creating a generational crisis. As countries struggle under the weight of borrowing costs, budgets for teachers, classroom materials, and infrastructure are being slashed. UNESCO argues that debt-for-education swaps offer a practical solution. Under these arrangements, a portion of a nation's debt is forgiven in exchange for a binding commitment to invest that same amount into educational programs.
The report highlights that this mechanism has been used successfully in a handful of cases but remains vastly underutilized. Without immediate action, the agency warns, the gap in learning outcomes between wealthy and poor nations will continue to widen, trapping millions of children in a cycle of poverty.
In other developments, authorities in Sri Lanka reported a violent incident at a prison in the capital, Colombo. Clashes between rival inmate groups left several people injured, prompting a lockdown of the facility. Officials are investigating the cause of the unrest.
Meanwhile, the United Nations announced a new humanitarian airlift operation to deliver critical medical supplies and food into Venezuela. The aid is intended to reach the most vulnerable populations, including children and the elderly, who have been hit hardest by the ongoing economic crisis. The operation marks a rare logistical success in a region facing severe access restrictions.
