As students across Oregon settle back into classrooms, a new poll is asking residents a straightforward question: Do you have faith in the state's public schools? The results are far from settled, with opinions split along generational and regional lines.

The timing is no accident. Recent data continues to place Oregon near the bottom nationally for fourth-grade reading and eighth-grade math scores. Those numbers have fueled a heated debate about funding, curriculum, and teacher retention. Supporters of the current approach point to increased per-student spending and new literacy programs rolled out this fall. They argue that test scores are a lagging indicator and that social-emotional learning investments will pay off in the long run.

Critics, however, see a system in crisis. Parents in several districts have voiced frustration over chronic absenteeism and the slow pace of academic recovery after the pandemic. One rural superintendent noted that hiring qualified substitutes remains a daily struggle. Meanwhile, urban districts are grappling with classroom size and behavioral issues.

The poll also highlights a sharp divide between homeowners without school-age children and younger families. The former often cite property tax burdens, while the latter prioritize smaller class sizes and mental health resources. With the next legislative session approaching, lawmakers on both sides are watching this survey closely. The question now is whether public confidence can be rebuilt before the next round of report cards arrives.
