A recent evaluation of state-level public education systems has placed Vermont and Nebraska at the top of the class. The report, which analyzed factors like funding equity, student achievement, and access to early childhood programs, awarded both states the highest marks for their commitment to public schooling.
Vermont earned praise for its consistent investment in per-pupil spending and its relatively low student-to-teacher ratios. The state also scored well on measures of academic progress, particularly in reading and math scores among elementary students. Nebraska, meanwhile, stood out for its strong graduation rates and the stability of its rural school districts. Analysts noted that the state has managed to maintain high standards despite a smaller tax base compared to wealthier coastal regions.
The report highlighted a widening gap between top-performing states and those struggling with chronic underfunding. States in the Southeast and parts of the Southwest received the lowest grades, with many facing teacher shortages and aging infrastructure. Researchers stressed that while Vermont and Nebraska offer a model, their success relies heavily on consistent local support and bipartisan education policies.
Critics of the report pointed out that raw rankings can overlook disparities within states. For example, Vermont's high overall score masks challenges in its more remote communities, where busing costs and internet access remain issues. Still, for now, both states serve as benchmarks for what a well-supported public education system can achieve.
