New federal guidance issued on August 20 is pressing schools to take a harder look at the educational technology they buy and use. The message is simple: ed tech must show real instructional value, not just flashy features or good marketing. The Department of Education is now urging districts to weigh evidence of effectiveness before making purchases and to keep checking whether those tools actually help meet learning goals over time.
The guidance asks school leaders to move away from adopting software or platforms based on habit or vendor claims. Instead, districts should set clear expectations tied to student outcomes and then measure progress against those benchmarks. That means ongoing evaluation, not just a one-time pilot at the start of the year. If a tool is not delivering measurable results, the guidance suggests cutting it loose.
At the same time, the department is calling on vendors to be more transparent about how their products work, what data they collect, and what proof they have that their product improves learning. Schools are encouraged to demand clear answers on those points before signing contracts. The overall tone is practical: technology is only useful if it helps teachers teach and students learn. Anything else is just a cost.
