UNC Overenrollment Strains the Limits of a College Education

The University of North Carolina system is facing a problem that many institutions across the country have learned to ignore until it becomes impossible to manage. Enrollment keeps climbing, but the resources available to support students have not kept pace. Classrooms are fuller, advising offices are stretched thin, and faculty members are being asked to do more with less. The result is an experience that increasingly fails to deliver what students were promised when they enrolled.

With all the cuts we are making, UNC is apparently "saving" more than 85 million dollars, but who exactly is being saved? That question deserves a serious answer. The money saved through reductions in staffing, programs, and services does not appear to be flowing back into the classroom. Instead, students are paying more for an education that offers fewer opportunities for meaningful interaction with professors, fewer course sections, and longer waits to get into required classes.

Overenrollment is not just a numbers problem. It changes the character of a university. When lecture halls hold hundreds of students and discussion sections are led by overworked graduate students, the kind of learning that happens through close mentorship and sustained intellectual engagement becomes a luxury rather than a standard. Students who need help are left to figure things out on their own.

This trajectory is not sustainable. A college education should be more than a credential earned by surviving a crowded system. If UNC continues to grow without investing in the people and programs that make education worthwhile, it will save money while losing the very thing it exists to provide.
