A coalition of research nonprofits and advocacy organizations has filed a lawsuit against top White House budget officials and education leaders, accusing them of illegally blocking hundreds of millions of dollars in congressionally approved funding. The lawsuit targets the Office of Management and Budget and the Department of Education for withholding money meant for the Institute of Education Sciences, the federal arm responsible for collecting data and conducting research on student performance, school safety, and teacher effectiveness.
The plaintiffs argue that the administration has no legal authority to unilaterally halt funds that were specifically allocated by Congress. The frozen money, estimated at over $300 million, was intended to support long-term studies on reading interventions, math instruction, and special education programs. Without these funds, researchers say they cannot continue tracking national education trends or evaluating which classroom strategies actually work.
The lawsuit names acting budget director and the education secretary as defendants. It seeks a court order to immediately release the funds and prevent future withholding without proper congressional approval. Legal experts say the case could set a precedent on how much control the executive branch has over spending that lawmakers have already approved.
Critics of the funding freeze argue it undermines the government's ability to make data-driven decisions about schools. Supporters of the administration have not yet commented on the lawsuit. The case now moves to federal court in Washington, D.C.
