The Texas State Board of Education has voted to include Bible passages in the approved reading list for public school classrooms. The decision, which passed along party lines, allows teachers to use selected verses from the Old and New Testaments as part of instructional materials for subjects like literature, history, and social studies. Supporters of the move argue that the Bible is a foundational text for understanding Western culture, law, and art. They say the passages will be used for academic purposes, not religious instruction.
Critics, however, see the decision as a step toward blurring the line between church and state. Several civil liberties groups have raised concerns that the inclusion could violate the First Amendment by promoting a specific religious viewpoint in public schools. Opponents also worry that the move could pressure teachers and students who do not share the Christian faith.
The board has stated that the passages are optional, not mandatory, and that local school districts will decide how to use them. The approved list includes excerpts from the books of Genesis, Psalms, and the Gospel of Matthew, among others. The decision is expected to face legal challenges in the coming months.
