Sudan receives $22 million from UN to rebuild education

A new $22 million funding package from the United Nations is set to help thousands of Sudanese children resume their education after years of disruption. The announcement came on Monday from Education Cannot Wait (ECW), the UN's global fund for education in emergencies. The money will be used to rebuild classrooms, provide learning materials, and train teachers in areas where schools have been shut down or destroyed.

The initiative targets the most vulnerable students, including those displaced by conflict and girls who have been out of school for extended periods. ECW officials say the funds will also support mental health programs for children who have experienced trauma. Many schools in Sudan have been used as shelters or have been damaged in the ongoing violence, leaving millions of young people without a safe place to learn.

This is not the first time the UN has stepped in for Sudan's education system, but the scale of this grant is significant. Local education authorities will work with community groups to make sure the money reaches the schools that need it most. The goal is to get at least 200,000 children back into classrooms within the next year. While the challenges remain huge, aid workers say this funding is a critical first step toward giving Sudan's next generation a chance at a better future.
