South Korea's education system consistently ranks among the best in the world when measured by standardized tests. Students post impressive scores in reading, math, and science, and the country's universities attract global attention. Yet a growing disconnect exists between what schools teach and what the economy actually needs.
The problem is not a lack of intelligence or effort. It is a matter of focus. The entire system is built around one goal: getting into a top university. From an early age, students are pushed into intense competition, private tutoring, and long hours of memorization. The pressure produces high test scores, but it also produces young adults who are exhausted, risk-averse, and narrowly trained.
Employers report a shortage of workers with practical skills. Small and mid-sized companies struggle to fill technical roles. Meanwhile, many graduates hold degrees that do not match available jobs. The result is a mismatch that slows growth and leaves young people frustrated.
Some policymakers have called for vocational training, apprenticeships, and stronger ties between schools and industry. Others argue that the cultural obsession with prestige must change first. Without that shift, the country may continue to win medals in education while losing ground in the workplace.
