Manchester school board members have decided to table a proposal that would have pushed back start times at city schools this fall. The move comes after surveys sent to families, staff, and the community last month revealed significant opposition to the plan.
The proposed change aimed to align school schedules with research suggesting later start times benefit adolescent sleep patterns and academic performance. However, the survey results indicated that many parents and employees are concerned about the logistical impact. Respondents cited potential disruptions to after-school activities, childcare arrangements, and transportation schedules as major obstacles.
Board members acknowledged the health benefits of later start times but said more work is needed to address the practical concerns raised by the community. The proposal will be revisited at a future meeting, giving administrators time to study the feedback and develop alternative options. For now, schools will maintain their current start times for the upcoming academic year.
