One year later, debate over Ohio’s higher education changes continues

COLUMBUS, Ohio - It has been a full year since the Advance Higher Education Act, better known as Senate Bill 1, was signed into law. The legislation, championed by state Senator Jerry Cirino, was sold as a way to rein in costs and refocus public universities on their core academic mission. But twelve months later, the debate over its impact is far from settled.

Supporters of the law argue it has brought much-needed accountability to campuses. They point to new restrictions on faculty strikes, a ban on diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, and a requirement that students take a course on American history or government. For them, the bill is a success in pushing back against what they see as political activism in the classroom.

Critics, however, paint a very different picture. Faculty groups and student organizations say the law has created a climate of fear and self-censorship. They argue that the ban on DEI initiatives has dismantled support systems for minority students and that the new course requirements are a political mandate rather than an educational improvement. Some professors have reported leaving the state, citing the new restrictions as a direct reason for their departure.

The battle has now moved to the courts. A lawsuit filed by a coalition of faculty members and students is currently making its way through the legal system, challenging the constitutionality of several provisions. As the anniversary passes, both sides are digging in, making it clear that the future of Ohio's public universities remains a deeply contested issue.
