Missouri Interim Education Commissioner Stacey Preis resigned Tuesday, effective immediately, as the State Board of Education moves forward with its search for a permanent leader. Preis, who had served as interim commissioner since June, announced her resignation to reporters during a break in Tuesday's State Board meeting in Jefferson City.
"At this time, I think it is best for the department and for me personally to step aside," Preis said. She did not elaborate on specific reasons for her departure but noted that the transition period had been demanding.
The State Board accepted her resignation during the meeting and thanked her for her service. Board members said the search for a permanent education commissioner will continue on its existing timeline, with candidates expected to be reviewed in the coming weeks.
Preis took over the department during a period of significant turnover and budget scrutiny. Her brief tenure included work on staffing shortages and implementation of state education funding formulas.
Deputy Commissioner Margie Vandeven, who previously held the commissioner role, will assist with day to day operations until an interim replacement is named, the board said. Officials did not provide a timeline for that appointment.
The board plans to discuss the next steps for the permanent search at its next regular meeting.
