The Missouri State Board of Education announced on Wednesday that Lisa Sireno will serve as the interim commissioner of education, following the resignation of Margie Vandeven. The decision comes as the board works to identify a permanent replacement to lead the state's education department.
Sireno, who has been with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for several years, brings extensive experience in state education policy and administration to the role. Her appointment is intended to provide stability and continuity while the board conducts its search for a permanent commissioner.
The board expressed confidence in Sireno's ability to guide the department through the transition period. In a statement, board members noted her deep understanding of the state's educational landscape and her commitment to supporting students, teachers, and school districts across Missouri.
Sireno will oversee the department's daily operations, including school accountability measures, educator preparation programs, and federal education funding distribution. She will also continue implementing initiatives aimed at improving student outcomes and addressing learning loss.
The resignation of the previous commissioner prompted the need for an interim leader. The board has not yet announced a timeline for selecting a permanent commissioner but indicated that a nationwide search will begin in the coming months.
