Meet 10 patron saints of Catholic education, students and teachers

Pope Leo XIV has formally declared St. John Henry Newman a patron saint of Catholic education, elevating him as a co-patron alongside the renowned theologian St. Thomas Aquinas. This designation, made on the 60th anniversary of the Vatican II declaration Gravissimum Educationis, highlights the Church's ongoing emphasis on the spiritual foundations of learning.

Newman now joins a venerable list of saints considered patrons for various facets of education, students, and teachers. These holy figures serve as heavenly intercessors and models for the academic community.

St. Thomas Aquinas, the "Angelic Doctor," is the universal patron of all universities, colleges, and schools, revered for his profound integration of faith and reason. For students specifically, St. Aloysius Gonzaga and St. Gemma Galgani are often invoked for purity and diligence in studies. St. Joseph of Cupertino is famously known as the patron of test-takers and those struggling academically.

Teachers find their patron in St. John Baptist de la Salle, the founder of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools and a pioneer in modern pedagogy. St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, who established the first Catholic school in the United States, is a patroness for Catholic schools. Other saints, like St. Catherine of Alexandria, protect philosophers and librarians, while St. Gregory the Great watches over musicians and singers. Each patron offers a unique spiritual perspective, guiding the pursuit of knowledge within the light of faith.
