WASHINGTON, July 06, 2026 -- The Integrative Health Policy Consortium (IHPC) has sent formal feedback to the U.S. Department of Education on the proposed Student Tuition and Transparency System, known as STATS. In its comments, the group warned that strict earnings-based accountability measures could backfire by limiting access to prevention-focused healthcare careers and hurting long-term workforce goals.
The IHPC argued that tying student loan accountability too heavily to post-graduation income might discourage people from entering fields like public health, nutrition, mental health counseling, and integrative medicine. These professions often have lower starting salaries compared to surgical specialties or hospital-based roles, but they play a critical role in keeping Americans healthy and reducing overall healthcare costs.
According to the consortium, the proposed rule could make it harder for students to afford training in these essential areas. If schools fear penalties for graduates with modest early earnings, they may cut programs that feed the prevention and wellness workforce. The IHPC urged the Department of Education to consider a broader set of metrics that reflect the value of these professions, including their impact on community health and the long-term savings they generate for the healthcare system.
The group also emphasized that aligning student loan policy with actual workforce needs is vital. As the U.S. faces shortages in primary care and preventive services, the IHPC believes the government must ensure that accountability rules do not worsen the problem. Instead, they should support training for the full range of healthcare roles that serve the public.
