A new legislative memorial urging the U.S. Congress to dismantle the federal Department of Education was introduced in the Idaho Statehouse this week. The measure, presented by Representative Monks to the House State Affairs Committee, frames the push as a states' rights issue, arguing that education governance should be returned entirely to state and local authorities.
The draft legislation contends that the creation of the cabinet-level department in 1979 was a federal overreach. Proponents argue that eliminating it would reduce bureaucracy, free states from federal mandates, and restore local control over curriculum, funding, and policy decisions. They believe this shift would allow Idaho to tailor its educational system more directly to the needs of its students without Washington's interference.
The memorial now moves through the committee process. If passed by the legislature, it would serve as a formal statement of Idaho's official position, adding the state's voice to a longstanding conservative policy objective. While symbolic, as only Congress could act to abolish the department, the move highlights ongoing tensions between state and federal authority in education policy and sets a clear ideological marker for Idaho's delegation in Washington.
