Florida's Department of Education pushes for all school districts to define rules regarding AI

The Florida Department of Education is moving to require every school district in the state to establish clear policies on artificial intelligence. The proposed rule change will be discussed at a public workshop scheduled for August 5, according to state documents.

The initiative aims to address the growing use of AI tools in classrooms, from student writing assistants to automated grading systems. Under the new directive, each district would need to define what constitutes acceptable use of AI for students and teachers. The rules would also cover data privacy, plagiarism, and how AI can be integrated into lesson plans without replacing human instruction.

State education officials have not yet released a draft of the specific requirements, but the workshop will allow educators, parents, and technology experts to provide input. The push comes as schools across Florida grapple with students using AI chatbots to complete assignments and as teachers experiment with AI to create curriculum materials.

Some districts, like Miami-Dade and Orange County, have already adopted their own guidelines. The state's move would create a baseline standard for all 67 county school systems. Critics argue that a one-size-fits-all approach may not work for districts with different resources and student populations. Supporters say it is necessary to prevent confusion and ensure academic integrity.

The workshop is open to the public. Any final rule would need approval from the State Board of Education before taking effect.
