The Garrett-Keyser-Butler Community School District officially broke ground on a new J.E. Ober Elementary School this week, marking a major milestone for the growing district. The project, which carries an estimated price tag of $60 million, aims to replace the aging current facility with a modern learning environment designed to serve students for decades to come.
District officials and community members gathered at the construction site to celebrate the beginning of work. The new school will feature updated classrooms, improved safety systems, and spaces for art, music, and physical education. Administrators have emphasized that the design focuses on flexibility, allowing teachers to adapt rooms for different learning styles and group sizes.
The current J.E. Ober Elementary building has been in use for over 60 years. District leaders say the old structure has become costly to maintain and no longer meets the needs of a 21st-century education. The new school will also include energy-efficient systems, which are expected to lower utility costs over time.
Construction is expected to take roughly two years, with a target opening date set for the fall of 2026. The district has planned for minimal disruption to classes during the building process. Students will continue attending the existing school until the new facility is ready.
