Copper Country ISD Proposes Renewal of Special Education Millage

October 5, 2026 - 21:12

Copper Country Intermediate School District is asking voters to renew its special education millage in November, aiming to replace a levy that has been in place for two decades. The district plans to keep the mill rate unchanged, meaning property owners would not see an increase in their tax bills if the measure passes.

The existing millage has funded essential services for students with disabilities across the region for the past 20 years. Those services include specialized instruction, therapy, transportation, and classroom support for students who need additional help to succeed in school. Without the renewal, district officials say those programs would face significant funding shortfalls.

The proposal maintains the current rate rather than seeking an increase, a decision district leaders describe as a way to continue vital services without adding pressure to local taxpayers. The millage would continue to support students in multiple districts throughout the Copper Country region.

Supporters argue that special education services are legally required and that local funding helps fill gaps left by state and federal sources. Opponents of similar measures often question property taxes, though this proposal does not raise rates.

Voters will decide the issue in November. If approved, the millage would continue funding special education programs for years to come, ensuring students with disabilities receive the support they need.
