CHCCS Board of Education Votes to Close Glenwood Elementary School, Protect Magnet Programs

CHCCS Board of Education Votes to Close Glenwood Elementary School, Protect Magnet Programs

The Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board of Education voted unanimously Thursday night to close Glenwood Elementary School, with the shutdown scheduled for the fall of 2027. The decision came after months of community debate and a review of declining enrollment and facility costs.

Board members emphasized that the closure is part of a broader effort to stabilize the district's budget while protecting magnet programs from cuts. Officials said the move will allow the district to redirect resources toward maintaining smaller class sizes and preserving specialized curriculum offerings at other schools.

Parents and staff at Glenwood had pushed to keep the school open, citing its strong community ties and successful academic programs. However, district data showed that the building is operating well below capacity, and needed repairs would cost millions. The board noted that no other elementary schools are currently under consideration for closure.

The district plans to work with families to transition students to nearby schools before the 2027-2028 school year. Teachers and staff at Glenwood will be reassigned based on seniority and openings elsewhere in the system. Board members acknowledged the emotional weight of the vote but argued it was necessary for long-term financial health.
