Roughly 1,600 educators in Broward County were denied money for classroom supplies this year, and district officials are pointing to a change in state law as the cause. The restriction limits who qualifies for reimbursement, leaving out teachers in roles such as reading coaches, speech-language pathologists and social workers.
The issue affects staff members who work directly with students but do not fit the state's narrow definition of a classroom teacher. Many of these employees still purchase materials with their own money to do their jobs, yet the current rules shut them out of the program.
District leaders say they are exploring a possible fix. Options under discussion include using local funds or adjusting how the reimbursement program is structured so more educators can take part. Any solution would need to work within the limits set by Tallahassee.
Union representatives argue the exclusion is unfair. They note that reading coaches and social workers often need books, testing materials and other tools to support students, and those costs should not fall on employees.
For now, the denied educators will not receive the supply money this year. Officials say they hope to have a plan in place before the next funding cycle begins.
